The Chains concept developed by Madame Godelieve Denys Struyf is a psycho-corporal approach and, as such, is multi-faceted. This series of six instalments addresses the biomechanical aspects of the method, which constitutes for the physiotherapist or manual therapist an essential base for the comprehension of individuals morphology. This understanding of the psycho-corporal terrain will then guide the choice of treatment to create a well-adapted intervention. The Method proposes a variety of therapeutic techniques to respond to this necessity of adaptability. These techniques include: massage, certain reflex techniques, mobilizations, local and global stretching, isometric contractions… Independent of the techniques used, intervention always relies upon a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology. There are no automatic formulas, only an appropriate adaptation to the individual case at hand. The Chainist does not stop at mere release, but also seeks to optimize functionality. He or she uses specific maneuvers to program or reprogram reciprocal muscle actions and emphasizes the learning or relearning of proper gesticulation. These two modes of intervention necessitate a good knowledge of the muscle pathways as well as their interactions at the level of the skeleton and joints. Bone, muscle, and fascia are one. To carry out the work of restructuring and reprogramming it is important to understand the laws of physiology that govern the human body and more particularly the locomotor system. One must recognize that which is “just” so as to correct that which is “faulty”. This series of six instalments seeks to facilitate the work of our students but could also educate the neophyte on the subject of the biomechanical aspects of the G.D.S. Chains. The first of these instalments establishes the basic notions needed for the in-depth study of each chain that will be developed in the following. Read more
